A Member's View - a Father's Day out at the Vyne, Hampshire

This summer, Rebecca, one of our members who has just moved to Hampshire, is going to be volunteering as a blogger for us. She's going to be writing about her adventures with her family all summer and trying the 50 things challenges. Rebecca has two daughters, who she will be calling Big Tot (BT) and  Little Tot (LT) in her posts. Here's her thoughts on a Father's day visit to the Vyne.

On a rather wet Sunday, BT, LT and I felt that we ought to treat the ‘Daddy’ in our life.  One of our favourite National Trust destinations, The Vyne, promised a day of welly wanging, hog roasts and beer tents.  What more could a father ask for on Fathers’ Day!  One of the best things about The Vyne is the fact that there is always so much to do there; lots of fantastic events from Tudor days to exhibitions and open air theatre performances as well as touring the magnificent house and going on adventures in the woodlands and wetlands – truly something for all ages.  In the past, BT and LT have enjoyed walking in the woods trying to spot fairies and now, much to their delight, to add to their exploring and tales of mystery and magic, there is even a fantastic new Tolkien ‘Ring’-inspired Hidden Realm playground to romp around too.

Welly wanging was the first order of the day!  Many thanks to the very patient rangers who encouraged one and all to have a go, trekking after errant wellies and even, on one occasion, receiving a rather muddy boot blow to the face!  One of the youngest throwers, BT thoroughly enjoyed herself trying to fling the welly as far as she could!  LT was a little bit too small for the welly wanging but loved meeting the cows on the estate face to face and even gave a very friendly calf a little pat.  On to the delicious hog roast and much to my husband’s delight, the beer tent!  Spirits certainly weren’t dampened by the rain and what could sum up British summertime more than sheltering under a large tree, sitting on very smart deckchairs overlooking the lake eating hog roast sarnies.  Thank goodness we had packed the anoraks and wellies!

With full tummies, we set off for Morgaston woods.  Exploring the woods at The Vyne always makes me feel like BT, LT and I are off on one of Enid Blyton’s Famous Five adventures!  This time, we were minus the ‘lashings of ginger beer’ and definitely not basking in sunshine but we did manage to complete another of our #50things challenges: #6 Running around in the rain!
